Janet and her son James started a factory in Dundee which is said to have made the first commercially produced marmalade in the world and the company was named after James. In 1828, the name was changed to James Keiller & Son when James' son by his first wife Barbara, also called James, joined the business. James (Jnr) died in 1849.
Up for auction is a very old stoneware jar. Imprinted into the clay on the bottom is "Pot Made in England".

The 1lb size stoneware jar is a gorgeous mixture of natural tones with shades Vintage James Keiller & Sons Dundee one pound marmalade pot, buff white pottery with black printing, 4 1/2" tall and 3" in diameter. Possibly dating to 1920s based on "Y" letter printed at the base of the wreath, as well as the style of rim where a cover was originally attached.
Manufactured by Maling pottery in the late 1800s, and embossed S Maling Newcastle on base. In excellent condition for its age, many of these jars are heavily marked from age.
